Football, Italy, Serie A: Sum up of the weekend

2009-05-04
This Serie A weekend could already have brought some decisions as far as the run for the scudetto is concerned, but also for the Champions League or the relegation zone - and yet, still everything is possible in this championship, but lets go through it step by step.

After Inter's victory on friday against Lazio (2-0) a false step by Milan would already have put an end to all discussions about the title, but in the end the rossoneri won 2-0 in Catania and can still at least dream of the title. Their coach Ancelotti doesn't want to hear talks about the title, he says the championship is already decided and Milan's only goal is to defend the Champions League zone (the second and third place), for which they would need 4 points out of 4 remaining games. Anyway, to reach Inter they need seven points more than the nerazzurri and someone is still dreaming...

In the lower regions of the championship as well the positions haven't changed after this weekend - Fiorentina have done what they had to do to defend their fourth place by beating Torino 1-0. The violet team certainly didn't make a brilliant performance like the one against Roma but the essential thing was to win this game, which they did. But who was hoping that this win would give them some air to breath in the run for the Champions League qualification has been deceived, as Fiorentina's direct rival Genoa has already fullfilled their task by winning sunday's derby against Sampdoria (3-1). The "grifoni" have therefore won their second derby this season, and this victory is very precious indeed as it means that there is still only one tiny point missing to reach the fourth place and therefore the Champions League qualification round.

Still a bit lower in the classification the run for salvation is getting tighter and tighter. Bologna had to swollow a bitter defeat against Reggina (1-2), their direct rival for salvation. Torino as well have lost (0-1 in Florence), while Lecce has managed to make a draw against Juventus, which means that the last four teams are within only three points difference (with Reggina on the last place with 27 points and Torino on the 17th place with 30 points) four rounds from the end. Next week it's the classico Torino - Bologna, maybe afterwards we will know a bit more...
