It was played 19 seasons in the First Slovenian Football League since 1991, when Slovenia was seperated from the then Yugoslavia. Since then, clubs of first league achieve some good classification in Europe. Here is the presentation of seasons in the Slovenian Football League.
The first championship was combine of the twenty-one teams, the best of them had Olimpija from Ljubljana. Their players has been combined for the appearance at higher levels - in the Yugoslav Cup. In the first season after 40-rounds they had a result of 30-6-4. And by 7 points in the lead over 2nd ranked Maribor. Maribor has this year also won the Cup of Slovenia, after penalties they beat Olimpija.
Superiority of Olimpija has continued over the next three years, when it gradually reduced the number of participating teams in the elite slovenian championship (18, 16, 12). In the season 1994/95, Gorica cut off Olimpija of their »chair«. Then league had ten members, out of it has dropped one of Slovenia's football giants Izola. A year later Gorica failed to defend the title, and for the first time it came to Maribor. Maribor repeat this achievement six times in succession. Maribor has under the guidance of coach Bojan Prašnikar in the season 1999/2000 came to greatest success of the Slovenian club football. After the winning against Genk and Lyon, they were listed to the Champions League. In group A their opponents were Bayer Leverkusen, Dinamo Kiev and Lazio from Rome. Maribor has say goodbye to Champions league with win in Kiev as well as draw with Bayern at home.
