Football, England, Premier League: Fixtures, Season 2009-2010

2009-07-15
They dominate both the Premiership and the Champions League: Englands Fab Four are a class of their own. Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal will once more sort out the title among themselves. However, the possibility of breaking their supremacy is growing.

Champion Manchester United will face a hard task: Cristiano Ronaldo’s transfer to Real Madrid leaves a huge gap in the squad which has not been filled yet. Manager Alex Ferguson could only bring Michael Owen to Old Trafford.
In the past season Chelsea and Liverpool have been the toughest rivals in the run for the title. It would be them who take advantage of United’s drain.
Rafael Benitez brought his Liverpool side closer to winning the league title than in the last 19 years. Continuity in squad policy may be decisive in this year’s campaign.
Still there is doubt on whether Carlo Ancelotti is right one or not to take over at the Stamford Bridge. Regarding the last years defensive tactics turned out to be a path to success for the Blues.
London Rival Arsenal is merely the outsider in the quartet of the Fab Four. Spending the money on their new Emirates Stadium the Gunners have had to cut short wages and fees. Winning the premiership seems to be out of reach. Arsene Wenger’s men were close to struggle in reaching the qualifying round for the Champions League. The fourth rank will be the season’s prime target for Fabregas & Co.

Arsenal will be joined in the race by a couple of teams. For instance, newly rich Manchester City who need not mind money too much thanks to the financial strength of their owners from Abu Dhabi. Sooner or later they will become a serious contender for the title. It could take a while till they have found the right formula, though.
It was up to Aston Villa to break into the Top-4 last season, but finally they failed in preserving their superb form over the whole year. The upcoming campaign will be decisive for Martin O’Neill and his players. Was the last season a one hit wonder or is Villa capable of taking on higher tasks?
Liverpool’s city-rival Everton has shown to be more constant. In the last couple of years the Toffes have always been in close pursuit of the Fab Four, however, them finishing higher than fifth would be a surprise, though.
Tottenham Hotspur has to convince both fans and critics after their last season that brought them close to catastrophe. Despite an illustrious squad the Spurs stayed closer to the bottom of the table than to it’s top. Another weak performance is unlikely to be shown at White Hart Lane.

Like on top the inner circle of teams most possibly to be relegated after the next season is recruited out of the usual suspects. Thus any club promoted will face a hard struggle to stay in the Premiership as much as last year’s newcomers. The gap between Premier League and League Championship has grown and it is not easy to establish oneself among England’s top flight. Nevertheless, at the end we all may witness a great surprise. Newcastle and Middlesbrough might tell more about that.
