Former Partizan coach Lothar Matthaus is once again the talk of the town in Belgrade. The 2003-04 season will forever live in the memories of Partizan fans, when the team – with Matthaus in charge – reached the Champions League group stage, a feat a Serbian side has yet to repeat.
- “There have been no calls from any Partizan official. But, you know, anything is possible. My door is always ajar.”
What about taking over Hannover 96?- “I read it in the papers too that I am on their shortlist of candidates, but again, I haven’t been contacted by anyone. If someone thinks Lothar Matthaus can indeed help them, then it’s no problem, I’m always open to discuss any offers.”
The Bundesliga opening days provided a few upsets.- “The beginning of the league season has been quite entertaining. Leverkusen, Hamburg, Schalke and Wolfsburg have had a fine start and we’ll see how it continues from here. Bayern have been slow, but that shouldn’t worry the fans. The team have the quality, they have a new coach in Van Gaal and it’s normal that the team need some time to adapt to each other. Bayern Munich will once again be a strong side, they are still favourites to win the title.”
Have you seen Partizan recently, and what do you make of the current squad?- “I don’t know anything about the current team, and I haven’t seen any recent games, but I am surprised they have failed to beat APOEL and make it through to the next round. When I saw the score, I compared the players of both teams and concluded that Partizan have a much stronger squad and that they certainly should have knocked the Cyprus team out,” Matthaus said for Blic.
