Football: English Premier League: Chelsea FC Receive FIFA Ban
2009-09-06
Top Premier League side Chelsea FC have just received a FIFA ban from signing new players until January 2011. This is an incredible disappointment for Blues' fans whose team is currently favored to win the Premiership and do well in Europe. The discrepancy came after a complaint from French side RC Lens who accused Chelsea of pushing teenager Gael Kakuta to break his contract and sign with them.
Kakuta was raised in the Chelsea youth system and can't be blamed for wanting to rejoin the club he grew up supporting. The 18-year-old winger was viewed as one of the most promising young players before signing with RC Lens last year. He will receive a 4-month ban from playing in matches for his involvement in the scandal. It is widely held, however, that Chelsea are to blame for inducing Kakuta to breach his contract. Chelsea can appeal this decision but if the decision holds, they will miss the next to transfer windows.
