Football: English Premier League: Chelsea Finally Fall
2009-09-26
After winning 6 out of their first 6 Premier League games, the juggernaut that is Chelsea FC finally fell in an away game to Wigan Athletic. The 3-1 scoreline was an outcome that none could have predicted. After Wigan went up 1-0 early in the first half, Didier Drogba managed to equalise in the 57'. Chelsea seemed to be on the right track until Petr Cech took down Wigan forward Hugo Rodallega, a challenge for which Wigan was awarded a penalty and Petr Cech received a red card. Rodallega sank the penalty and despite a couple of changes later in the match, Chelsea were never able to equalise. A 90' goal from Austrian defender Paul Scharner put the match beyond reach, sending Chelsea home empty handed. Chelsea have a midweek match against Cyprus side APOEL and must regroup and forget this loss quickly if they are to avoid a calamitous fall from the Champion's League.
