Football, English Premier League, Michael Owen: 'I will play for England'

2009-09-30
Michael Owen claims that he will make a return to the English National Squad. After nearly 8 years since his last call-up, Owen has begun to make an impact in the Premier League again. He has scored twice in 5 games after signing with champions Manchester United. Most of these goals came as a late substitute, a role that may change if his form continues. Owen is only 29, but many see him as an old player who has lost his pace and passed his prime. The Manchester striker sees it differently:

"I am not slower now than I was seven, eight years ago,'' Owen told the Times. "No chance. With the hamstring problems early in my career, they knocked a yard off my pace straightaway, but since then I have been the same player and if anything I have improved."

If this is true and Sir Alex can push Owen to return to his previous greatness, Fabio Capello will have to watch out for him. However, Fabio Capello has shown no signs that he'll call up the former Liverpool hitman anytime soon. Meanwhile, Michael Owen will try to impress and realise his dream of playing in South Africa next summer.
