Football, Premier League, Day 10: FC Liverpool vs Manchester United
|
2009-10-23
Liverpool will host Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday afternoon in one of the most anticipated Premier League clashes of the year. The Reds are currently on their worst run for 22 years, having lost their last four games and Rafael Benítez is under huge pressure. Defeat against Manchester United would represent Liverpool's worst run of form for 56 years and leave a ten-point chasm between these sides.
Despite all the struggles, manager Benítez is not ready to throw in the towel just yet and sees Sunday´s match against their bitter rivals as an ideal opportunity to get back on track for the season. Certainly there are signs of hope for the Reds as their injury problems appear to be easing with Fernando Torres hopeful of returning from a thigh problem and Glen Johnson fit from groin strain. Steven Gerrard ,however, is still struggling with a similar problem and remains doubtful for Sunday.
Manchester United will arrive in buoyant mood at Anfield, having maintained their 100% winning record in Europe in midweek to extend their unbeaten run to 11 games in all competitions. The Red Devils would love to extend this streak through Sunday, especially after Liverpool won without Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard in the starting line-up when the clubs met at Anfield last season. Sir Alex Ferguson will likely have to do without shootingstar Wayne Rooney who has missed the last two games with a calf injury and looks unlikely to return on Sunday. Darren Fletcher (groin) is also questionable, but Ryan Giggs and Patrick Evra have recovered.
FC Liverpool vs Manchester United
Fixture: Sunday, October 25th 2009, 15:00 Stadium: Anfield, Liverpool Referee: Andre Marriner
Tip: Given Liverpool´s dismal run, Manchester United might appear as clear favorites at Anfield. But I don´t see The Red´s giving up that easily and expect them to fight out a draw on Sunday.
My tip: X
