Football, Premier League: Liverpool faces serious injury woes
|
2009-11-03
Liverpool´s injury list now reaches double figures ahead of Wednesday´s crucial Champions League match against Lyons.
The Reds were already without skipper Steven Gerrard (groin), Albert Riera (hamstring), Martin Kelly (ankle),Martin Skrtel (muscle and virus), Glen Johnson (calf) and Fabio Aurelio (calf). Now also Daniel Agger - who has a recurrence of his back injury - Alberto Aquilani (virus) and David Ngog (ankle) are doubtful. Even reserve keeper Diego Cavalieri is questionable as he recovers from illness. As if that was not enough trouble for Manager Rafa Benitez, Liverpool’s medical staff delivered the worrying prognosis yesterday that Fernando Torres could require surgery if he is overplayed. Torres was initially believed to have suffered adductor strains during last month's World Cup qualifiers for Spain. However, it has now emerged that the Spaniard´s problem is a hernia that has prevented him from training between games. Benitez now faces a tough decision whether to let Torres play from the start against Lyon, risking a long term injury to his star striker, or to rest Torres and accept the less than bright prospects for his team´s offensive power on Wednesday. With Liverpool facing seemingly insurmountable problems, the clouds are getting darker and darker over Rafa Benitez and his future with The Reds.
