Friday the 13th left the Home Depot Center in
Los Angeles in an eerie dark for about 36 total minutes during the West Coast Conference Final between
L.A. Galaxy and
Houston Dynamo. In the 18th and 50th minutes the stadium lighting went out for about 15 minutes each. This ended up favoring the
L.A. Galaxy as each time the power came on, they seemed to be playing better than they were previously. The match remained scoreless for the first 90 minutes, forcing the game into overtime. The breakthrough came in the 103rd minute from a free kick by
David Beckham. A swerving ball into the box was deflected to the feet of defender
Berhalter, who was just feet in front of the goal. After scoring the first goal of the match, Galaxy was able to hold out for the first part of extra time. In the second half
Gordon was brought down in the penalty box for a chance at insurance.
Landon Donovan, their designated penalty taker, is known for always shooting to the right. This time, however, he fooled the keeper with a decisive shot to the left-center of goal and put the Galaxy up with a 2 goal advantage. When the final whistle blew the entire stadium was celebrating as
David Beckham and
Landon Donovan would reach their first MLS Cup Final together. They will face
Real Salt Lake in the final, who have just beaten the
Chicago Fire in the Eastern Conference Final. The MLS Cup Final will be held
Sunday November 22 in Seattle, Washington.
