The World Cup 2010 final draw will be held in Cape Town on Friday 4 December. On the occasion of the upcoming draw the FIFA Organising Committee announced the top seeds and draw procedures today. With France and Portugal two big football nations have been dropped to Pot 4.
From 11 June next year 32 nations will compete in eight groups for reaching the next round in South Africa. Brazil, Argentina, Germany, England, the European Champion Spain and the current World Champion Italy as well as the Netherlands are the seven squads that join host South Africa as seeded teams for the final draw. Pot 2 includes four Asian teams (Japan, Korea DPR, Korea Republic, Australia), three teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean (USA, Mexico, Honduras), and New Zealand as Oceania representative. Pot 3 consists of five African teams (Algeria, Cameroon, Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire) and the three remaining teams from South America (Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay). Finally, Pot 4 contains the remaining European teams, including France, Portugal, Denmark, Greece, Slovenia, Slovakia, Serbia and Switzerland.
The new draw procedures have attracted public interest since only the composition of Pot 1 was based on the FIFA World Ranking (October 2009). Pot 2-4 were allocated according to regional criteria.
