On 15th of december 2009 the FIBA held the
Draw of the group stage for the FIBA WC 2010 in Turkey in Istanbul. At this draw there was drawn some exciting games at the groups stage. But all in sequence.
Following nations enforced out of the continental qualification:
FIBA Africa Championship: Angola, Ivory Coast und Tunisia
FIBA America Championship: Argentina, Brazil, Canada und Puerto Rico
FIBA Asia Championship: China, Iran und Jordan
FIBA EuroBasket: Croatia, France, Greece, Serbia, Slovenia und Spain
FIBA Oceania Championship: Australia und New Zealand
These 18 teams were completed by the host country Turkey and the regnant Olympic Champion USA. Already last weekend (12th of december 2009) the FIBA Central Board assigned 4 Wild Cards for the FIBA Worldchampionship 2010. These wild cards were given to: Germany, Lebanon, Lithunia und Russia.
Yesterday's draw resulted in following 4 groups à 6 teams: (in bracket you will find the position of the FIBA World Ranking)
Group A: Serbia (5.), Argentina (1.), Australia (11.), Jordan (37.), Germany (7.), Angola (12.)
Group B: Croatia (15.), Brazil (14.), Tunisia (42.), Slovenia (20.), Iran (21.), USA (2.)
Group C: China (9.), Turkey (18.), Russia (17.), Puerto Rico (10.), Ivory Coast (40.), Greece (4.)
Group D: Lithunia (6.), Lebanon (24.), France (15.), Spain (3.), Canada (19.), New Zealand (13.)
For Germany the draw gives a very good decision in goup A, a group were Germany could see a good result. The topgame of group A will be for sure between Serbia and Australia but also the other groups see some hard games at the beginning of these championship. In group B USA is facing Croatia and Brazil, in group C the clashes of 4 teams with ambitions for the semifinals between China, Turkey Russia and Greece and in group D with Spain and France also 2 candidates for a semifinal.
The mode of the FIBA WC 2010 sees 4 goups of 6 teams. In each group the first 4 ranks give a qualification for the round of the last 16. This round continous with a KO-system until the 12th of december when the new World Champion will be established. The start of the FIBA WC 2010 will be held 2 weeks before on the 28th of august 2010.
