The
United States finally succumbed to pressure Saturday night when
Ghana won 2-1 in extra time, sending the
Black Stars to the quarterfinals.
The
Yankees once again gave up an early goal when
Kevin Prince Boateng split the defense to slot home the opening goal in the 5'. A foul on Clint Dempsey gave the Americans a penalty in the 62', which
Landon Donovan put away cleanly.
When 90' were up, all scores were even and the game went to extra time. Just 3 minutes later in-form
Asamoah Gyan powered a shot past Tim Howard to put Ghana once again in the lead. Though the United States tried to get the equalizer, they were left frustrated when the final whistle was blown.
Ghana will face either
England or
Germany in the Quarterfinals, depending on the outcome of Sunday afternoon's match.
