WC-Germany advance to Quarterfinals, England claim goal controversy

Football - World Cup 2010 - 2010-06-27
The Three Lions crashed out of the World Cup in an astonishing 4-1 defeat to Germany this afternoon. The result does not come without controversy as Frank Lampard's first half equalizer was disallowed after the officials failed to see it cross the goal line.

After going down 2-0 inside of 30 minutes, Matthew Upson put the Three Lions back in the game with a 37' header. Just minutes before the halftime whistle was blown, Frank Lampard fired a longshot that bounced off the crossbar and into the goal before rebounding out again.
The goal was not counted but replays show the ball bouncing a good foot behind the line.

Youngster Gerd Muller scored twice in the 2nd half to ensure a German victory, leaving the English side frustrated and fuming. Despite several chances throughout the match for England, it was apparent that the better side won after Germany repeatedly got in behind English defenders.

Germany will face the winner of tonight's match between Argentina and Mexico this week in the Quarterfinals.
