Since their promotion to the Primera Division in 1998 Villarreal has never been able to win away against Real Madrid. On
Sunday, January the 4th 2009 (Kick-Off at 5pm CET) last season‘s runners-up will face the current Spanish Champion to finally take the three points from the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
After two defeats against Sevilla and mighty FC Barcelona before the Christmas break Villarreal also lost their second place in La Liga and rank now sixth. However, after the close 1:2-defeat against Barca the “Yellow Submarine”, as FC Valencia’s local rival is called, was happy with its performance on the pitch. Against the other huge club in Spain last year’s runners-up set high hopes in their star-striker Marcos Senna. Senna has just recently put down transfer rumours of him joining Manchester City.
Concerning transfers Real Madrid’s sporting director Pedrag Mijatovic has manoeuvred his club into a dead end by signing Klaas jan Huntelaar and Lassana Diarra. Both players have already played in this season’s Uefa-Cup. According to the Uefa only one of them can be registered for Real’s Champions League campaign. It seems like Real took their chaos with them into the New Year.
In the last season Real Madrid won both games against Villarreal: 3:2 (h); 5:0 (a)
