| Neither Newcastle United nor Arsenal have done much to please their fans this summer, and both sides will want to lift the moods of their supporters when they face off at St. James Park on Saturday. Both sides have failed to convince in the transfer market over the summer, leading to some unrest. In addition to transfer woes, Arsenal's traditional injury problems may have already begun; Vermaelen and Wilshere are recovering from injuries, while Van Persie, Walcott and Gibbs are also doubts. Ben Arfa, Harper and Ryan Taylor may miss the game for the Magpies. |

Newcastle fans have been disappointed by the club's failure to reinvest the funds brought in by the sale of Andy Carroll in January. Alan Pardew has made five signings but with three of those coming as free transfers, there is some skepticism, especially as club captain Kevin Nolan has left, Jose Enrique seems to be leaving, and Joey Barton's future is now uncertain. Demba Ba performed well in a struggling West Ham side last season and may prove a good addition, while the jury is out on Frenchmen Cabaye and Marveaux, signed from Lille and Rennes respectively.
Last season this fixture resulted in a thrilling 4-4 draw after Arsenal had taken a 4-0 lead by half time. This was arguably the point at which the Gunners' title challenge fizzled; they won only four of their next 12 games in the Premier League and exited all three cup competitions. There certainly seemed to be a loss of confidence among their players and Arsene Wenger will have to hope that the summer break has arrested this decline. The potential losses of Fàbregas and Nasri won't be inspiring although new signings Gervinho and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain may make an impact in their absence.
