The Genova derby between Genoa and Sampdoria at the stadio Marassi (sunday, 8:30 p.m.) is one of the most interesting games of this Serie A weekend. Even if, to tell the truth, for Sampdoria there's not a lot left to win or to loose in this championship. They find themselves at the 13th place with 12 points distance to the relegation zone and eleven points to the UEFA cup zone. Their focus therefore certainly is already on the Coppa Italia final on the 13th of may at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome against Lazio. This is shown also by the enthusiasm of their supporters, around 20 000 of whom will approximately follow their team to Rome in special trains and buses.
For the derby as well there are almost no tickets left, the atmosphere at the Marassi will surely be breathtaking. As far as the championship is concerned, the game will be important mostly for the home team Genoa who could take the fourth place (meaning a place in the Champions League qualification) from Fiorentina by beating Sampdoria. But in order to do so, they will have to show the right attitude again after the two lost games against Bologna and Lazio, otherwise they might find themselves with four points distance to Fiorentina after this weekend with four games still to be played...
The "doriani" as well will do what they can to win this derby, even if they might already be thinking of the cup final against Lazio, but for sure they want to satisfy their supporters and not lose the second derby in this season (the first one was won by Genoa with 1-0). I think it will be a great game which should logically be won by Genoa, but the enthusiasm of having reached the cup final might turn out to be an advantage for Sampdoria, giving them extra motivation and strength.
