Then Werder Bremen won 1:0 at home and drew 2:2 away against AS Saint-Etienne to qualify for the UEFA Cup quarter-finals, where they beat Udinese Calcio (3:1 at home and 3:3 away).
First leg at the Weserstadion: Werder Bremen was the more active team and above all in the second half predominant. On the other side Hamburg had only few chances, but they scored by a header of Piotr Trochowski the only goal in this match. With it Hamburg also succeeded the revenge for the DFB Cup defeat 8 days before.
