The
ÖFB Cup final between
FC Trenkwalder Admira and
FK Austria Wien will be played at the “Pappel-Stadion” in Mattersburg (Sunday, 24.5.2009, 4:30 CET). Record winner and titleholder Austria is to be favoured in the final, but the cup competition has own laws.
FK Austria Wien is for the sixth time in a row in the ÖFB Cup final. In the years 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007 Austria won the ÖFB Cup. Only in 2004 they lost the final against GAK. Austria Wien has dominated the cup competition not only during the last years. With a total of 26 titles they are record winners. The last cup defeat collected Austria in the 2004-final against GAK with coach Walter Schachner.
Meanwhile Schachner coaches the second division team FC Trenkwalder Admira. In the league they are fallen back on the 3rd rank after 3 defeats in a row. Now the full concentration is valid on the ÖFB Cup final. For Admira it is the first ÖFB Cup final since 1996 (1:3 defeat against Sturm Graz). Should Admira win the final, it would be the first title for the team since 1966. At that time they won the double.
