FSV Mainz 05 welcomes Bayer Leverkusen to the start of the new season in German Bundesliga. Mainz is for many experts the biggest underdog in the league, while Leverkusen counts as top team.
Mainz 05 managed the Bundesliga comeback with the second place in the 2008-09 season of the 2. Bundesliga. They were last season the strongest away team of the second league and got more points in the away fixtures than in the home games (27 points at home, 36 points away). In current DFB cup Mainz 05 retired against fourth league club VfB Lübeck in the first round with 0-1. Thereupon coach Jörn Andersen has been sacked. The club replaced the Norwegian by installing former youth team coach Thomas Tuchel.
Bayer Leverkusen was last season, especially in the first season half, one of the strongest Bundesliga teams. For some rounds they were also league leader. But in spring season the performance of Leverkusen was not continual, so they fallen back on the 9th rank at the end of season. Better was their performance in the DFB cup. Leverkusen advanced with wins over Energie Cottbus, Bayern München and Mainz to the final, which got lost against Werder Bremen with 0-1. In the current cup competition Leverkusen eliminated in the first round SV Babelsberg (1-0 away victory). The winning goal scored new player Eren Derdiyok.
