Austria welcomes on Saturday the
Faroe Islands at the UPC Arena in Graz. The Austrian team must win this fixture to protect their theoretical chance on a
World Cup 2010 ticket.
The chance to qualify for the World Cup 2010 in South Africa is for the Austrian football team on a minimum. Austria is 11 points behind group leader Serbia and also 6 points behind second placed team France. Therefore they must win against the Faroe Islands to protect their minimum chance. But the history of the Austrian football team against the Faroe Islands is not the best. On 12 September, 1990 they lost against the Faroe Islands with 0-1, in current World Cup qualification the ÖFB-team reached in Torshavn only a 1-1 draw.
Under new head coach Didi Constantini the Austrian team is improving rapidly. Especially the youngsters like Jimmy Hoffer, Daniel Beichler and Jakob Jantscher are very important players in the Austrian team. Not in squad is forward Rubin Okotie (injured). For him Roman Wallner will be in the Austrian squad.
The Faroe Islands are the underdog in group 7 and got up to now only 1 point (1 draw, 5 defeats), but they should not be underestimated. The team of head coach Brian Kerr has lost in Serbia 0-2 and in Lithuania only 0-1. Also in the home match against France the Faroe Islands played well and lost only 0-1.
