Hapoel Tel-Aviv, runner-up of Ligat Ha'al 2008/2009, started the Europa League Group stage with a 2-1 win over Celtic Glasgow. Hapoel were 1-0 down 15 minutes before end of regular time, but they battled back to win 2-1 through goals from Nemanja Vučićević und Maaran Lala. On their road to the Group stage Hapoel Tel-Aviv eliminated IFK Göteborg (aggregate 4:2) and FK Teplice (3:2), whereupon Hapoel won against both clubs the away game.
