Aston Villa will host Manchester City on Monday evening, trying to recover from a disappointing last minute defeat at Blackburn last weekend, which ended a six-match winning streak in all competitions. Despite the home advantage, expect a tight match for The Lions: City have won ten of the last 15 league and cup meetings against Villa home and away, losing just twice.
Villa are looking for a third successive home win, but manager Martin O'Neill has struggled to get consistency from his team this season. After a disappointing opening defeat at Villa Park against Wigan Athletic, The Lions seemed to have gotten on the right track with a 3-1 victory against Liverpoool at Anfield road only to loose again last weekend against Blackburn. Villa also faces injury trouble with Steve Sidwell, Curtis Davies, Luke Young and Stewart Downing still out of competition. However, despite unsteady results so far, the Lions find themselves just three points behind City and can leapfrog the billionaires with a two-goal victory.
Manchester City have recorded 5 wins from their opening six games so far, in what is their best season start since 1961-1962. On Monday against Villa they will be bolstered by the return of striker Emmanuel Adebayor and midfielder Stephen Ireland. Adebayor has completed a three match ban following his controversial goal celebration against Arsenal last month, while Ireland has recovered from a sickness bug.
Expected lineups:
Aston Villa (Probable, 4-1-3-2): Friedel; Cuéllar, Dunne, Collins, Warnock; Petrov; Milner, Sidwell, Young; Carew, Agbonlahor
Manchester City (Probable, 4-5-1): Given; Richards, Lescott, Toure, Bridge; Wright-Phillips, Barry, Ireland, Bellamy; Tévez, Adebayor
Aston Villa vs Manchester City
Fixture: Monday, October 5th, 21:00 CET Stadium: Villa Park, Aston Referee: Mike Dean
Tip: I expect the powerful striker duo Adebayor - Tevez to create a lot of headache for Villa´s defense. This should be a tight match, but I expect Manchester City to escape from Villa Park with a narrow victory.
My tip: 2
