In Group 1 of the
UEFA World Cup qualification four teams still have a chance to qualify for the WC 2010 in South Africa. On Saturday
Portugal hosts
Hungary, while Denmark faces in the parallel game on Sweden. The final decision, which nation goes direct to the World Cup 2010 and which nation takes the loop way via the play-offs, will probably follow on the last matchday.
Portugal has started the World Cup qualifier as favourite of Group 1, but the 4-0 opener win in Malta followed a 2-3 home defeat against Denmark and 3 goalless draws. Hence, the Portuguese around superstar Cristiano Ronaldo were only on rank 4. Then Portugal beat Albania and Hungary and played 1-1 in Denmark. So they have at least a theoretical chance to advance to the play-offs.
In contrast to Portugal Hungary started nearly perfect in the WC qualification. The team of Erwin Koeman started with 4 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat and faced the play-off-rank. But then Hungary lost the direct fixtures against Sweden (1-2) and Portugal (0-1). Therewith the chance on a World Cup ticket is on a minimum.
Portugal has won the first leg in Budapest through a goal from Pepe 1-0.
