Football, Premier League, Day 9: Wigan Athletic vs Manchester City
|
2009-10-16
Wigan Athletic will host injury plagued Manchester City on Sunday evening in one of the more exciting games of this week´s Premier League weekend.
Wigan have lost their last game against Hull City on Saturday after surprisingly beating Chelsea the week before. Interestingly, Wigan they now gone 23 games since they were last involved in a score draw. Such turbulent stats very much signify the imbalance of Wigans´s performances: It is all or nothing for the Latics. Manager Roberto Martinez will assess the fitness of his international players, as they are returning from World Cup Qualification matches. Honduras pair Hendry Thomas and Maynor Figueroa - who helped book a World Cup place with a midweek victory over El Salvador - Colombia striker Hugo Rodallega and Trinidad and Tobago forward Jason Scotland have all had long trips back from South and Central America and are questionable as far as shape and general match fitness are concerned.
Manchester City manager Mark Hughes, however, has much more serious troubles to deal with, as several of his key players still struggle with injury problems. Kolo Toure (heel), Craig Bellamy (groin), Joleon Lescott (calf), Pablo Zabaleta (hamstring), Martin Petrov (knee) and Nigel De Jong (knock) are all sidelined. Hughes will have to rely on City´s depth of talent in their squad, which could well compensate for injury related shortfalls.
Fixture: Sunday, October 18, 17:00 CET Stadium: JJB Stadium, Wigan Referee: Alan Wiley
Tip: Man City have never won in six trips to Wigan in all competitions since the Lactics left Springfield Park. This will not change on Sunday. My tip is a draw, which is long overdue for Wigan.
My tip: X
