The Austrian champion Red Bull Salzburg is on the best way towards reaching the knockout phase. The Stevens-men won their opening two games. First they beat S.S. Lazio in Rome 2-1, followed by an impressive 2-0 home win over the Spanish top club FC Villarreal. The goals in Rome scored Franz Schiemer and Marc Janko, at the home game against Villarreal Salzburg won through goals from Janko and Somen Tchoyi. The last round of the Austrian Bundesliga brought a 0-1 defeat in the top game against FK Austria Vienna.
In contrast to Salzburg Levski Sofia has a very bad start in the UEFA Europa League group stage. The Bulgarian champions lost their two group games without scoring a goal. So Levski is last of Group G. The 0-1 in the opener fixture in Spain against Villarreal followed a 0-4 at home versus S.S. Lazio. Levski is also in the national championship in weak form. The last round brought a 0-1 home defeat against PFK Beroe, therewith Levski Sofia has fallen back on table rank 9, already 15 points behind league leader CSKA Sofia. The Europa League fixture in Salzburg is Levski's first game under Georgi Ivanov following the resignation of Serbian coach Ratko Dostanić in the wake of the 0-1 defeat against PFC Beroe.
