FC Bayern München welcomes French champions
FC Girondins de Bordeaux in the top game of Group A. Two weeks ago the both clubs met in France, where Bordeaux won 2-1. Now Bayern will rehabilitate for this defeat and protect their chance to advance to the Ko-stage.
FC Bayern München is at the moment only on table rank 3 in Group A. They started with 1 win, 1 draw and 1 defeat in the UEFA Champions League group stage. Bayern was leading after an own goal of Michaël Ciani, but at the end they lost 1-2. Daniel Van Buyten (red card) and Thomas Müller (yellow-red card) were sent off. So coach Louis van Gaal will have to pass on the booked players Van Buyten and Müller as well as on the injured offensive players Frank Ribéry and Ivica Olic. In the German Bundesliga Bayern München is since 4 games unbeaten, the last round brought a goalless draw against VfB Stuttgart.
FC Girondins de Bordeaux is leading Group A after Matchday 3. Bordeaux started the UEFA Champions League group stage with a 1-1 away draw against Juventus Turin. The goal for the French champions scored Jaroslav Plašil. On matchday 2 Girondins beat Maccabi Haifa 1-0 through a late goal from defender Michaël Ciani (83.). Ciani was also in the duel with Bayern one of the most peculiar players. First he scored an own goal, then the goal to the 1-1 draw. At the end Bordeaux won 2-1. Bordeaux is also in the French championship top. The team of coach Laurent Blanc is leading the table after 11 rounds, last Saturday they celebrated a 1-0 win in the top game versus AS Monaco.
The first previous encounter between Bordeaux and Bayern came in the 1995/96 UEFA Cup final. Bayern won 5-1 on aggregate and for the first time the UEFA Cup trophy.
