Chelsea seem to be unstoppable lately, not conceding once and beating opposition by a minimum 4 goals in each of their last 4 games (4-0, 5-0, 4-0, 5-0).
Solomon Kalou,
Didier Drogba, and
Frank Lampard have stolen the spotlight, scoring in nearly every one of these games. Goalkeeper
Petr Cech has been clinical, not allowing a single goal since they faced
Aston Villa 5 games ago.
Chelsea are top of Group D and only 3 points clear of their nearest challengers
FC Porto. They will go through regardless, as the other 2 teams have only accumulated a single point thus far. They also have a tough match coming up this weekend against
Manchester United who are trying to take them off the top of the Premier League standings. Despite this, manager
Carlo Ancelotti will have enough selection at his disposal to field a strong squad. They will put forth another good effort and expect a strong defensive front.
Atletico Madrid had gotten off to such a miserable start both to their La Liga and Champions League campaigns that they opted to fire manager
Abel Resino. After winning just 1 of 10 games as manager, the club let
Resino go immediately following a 4-0 defeat the last time they played
Chelsea. Assistant coach
Santi Denia has taken over and will try to turn their La Liga season around to avoid relegation. As a result of this, Champions League won't be at the top of their list of priorities. With a Madrid derby around the corner, the new manager will likely opt for a defensive formation and rest some of his formidable squad of strikers.
Atletico do not have much to play for in this game other than pride, and that won't be enough.
Chelsea's recent form coupled with the strength of their squad will enable them to be victorious over
Atletico when they travel to Madrid on Tuesday. It probably will not be the 4-0 route we saw in London, but they should take care of the Spanish club neatly.
