This Thursday Dutch cup winner Heerenveen will meet the German representative Hertha BSC as part of the 4th Matchday of the UEFA Europa League. About two weeks before the first leg of both clubs on the international stage ended with a 1:0-away victory for the Dutchmen.
For years the SC Heerenveen is known as one of the best talent pools of the country. What are outstanding strikers like Ruud van Nistelrooy (Real Madrid), Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (AC Milan) and the Dane Jon Dahl Tomasson (Feyenoord) linking? Once they all played in their first professional years for inconspicuous SC Heerenveen. The Frisians gained in the last seasons almost a notably transfer plus, in order to finance the lavishly youth system. Behind the Big Three (Ajax Amsterdam, PSV Eindhoven, Feyenoord), the sports club Heerenveen has consolidated his place in the top field of the Eredivisie. This year, it looks less good for the club, founded in 1920. Only one point separates them from the relegation zone. In the Europe League the squad captained by Michael Dingsdag holds second place with four points after the first round.
Afflicted from the crisis has also opponent Hertha BSC. Germanys capital-club yearns for a sense of success in the German Bundesliga. Seemed so surprising resurgence in the last season, more unexpectedly, the fans arrived by the sudden descent. Off the ranks the fourth of last season now lies on the bottom of table. Just four points after eleven games is the bitter truth for Hertha. Meanwhile, the alarm bells in Berlin are ringing unmistakable: with the worst defense in the league (25 goals conceded) and the chronic harmlessness in the attack itself presents a bleak scenario. Therefore little wonder that even at European level it's still not running. The draw against FK Ventspils at home was already the highest of feelings for the Funkel-squad.
