On upcoming Saturday
Switzerland hosts
Norway in an
international friendly match at the Stade de Genève. The Swiss team has qualified as group winner for the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa, while the Norwegian team will miss the final tournament. Norway finished their Group 9 as second, but as the weakest second placed team of the UEFA zone they missed the play-offs.
The team of national coach Ottmar Hitzfeld has qualified as winner of Group 2 for the FIFA World Cup 2010. But their qualification start was moderate. The 2-2 opener draw in the away game against Israel followed an embarrassing 1-2 at home against underdog Luxembourg. But then the Swiss team become stronger and stronger. So they finished their group as winner ahead Greece, Latvia and Israel. Especially the two wins in the direct duels against Greece were very important. In the friendly match on Saturday Swiss-coach Ottmar Hitzfeld will have to pass on left defender Christoph Spycher (injured). For him Reto Ziegler from Sampdoria Genua will come in the starting eleven.
In contrast to Switzerland their friendly opponent Norway will miss the World Cup 2010 in South Africa. Norway finished Group 9 on rank 2 behind Netherlands, but they missed the UEFA play-offs as weakest second placed team. The team of coach Egil Olsen has lost in the WC qualification only 2 games (2 wins, 4 draws, 2 defeats), both against group winner Netherlands. In the friendly game against Switzerland coach Egil Olsen will have to pass on Simen Brenne, Vadim Demidov and Björn Helge Riise (all down with influenza). Instead of this trio Olsen has nominated Jon Inge Höiland (Stabaek) and Jan Gunar Solli (Brann Bergen) in the Norway-squad.
