On upcoming Wednesday the second legs of the
FIFA World Cup qualification play-offs will be played. In the UEFA zone the play-offs brings the duel between
Bosnia-Herzegovina and
Portugal. The Portuguese won the first leg through a goal from
Bruno Alves 1-0. So they need a draw in the second leg to qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2010 final tournament.
Bosnia-Herzegovina finished Group 5 as second behind European champions Spain and qualified for the play-offs. The team of national coach Miroslav Blazevic has won 6 of their 10 qualification games (6 wins, 1 draw, 3 defeats) and finished Group 5 ahead the strong Turkey team. Very important for Bosnia-Herzegovina were the Wolfsburg-players Edin Dzeko and Zvjezdan Misimovic, which scored together 14 of 25 Bosnia-Herzegovina goals in the WC qualification. Dzeko and Misimovic were also in the first leg against Portugal in good form, but they could not prevent the 0-1 defeat. Bosnia-Herzegovina played a good but unlucky first leg, because 2 minutes before the break Senijad Ibricic headed a corner on the crossbar and 1 minute from the end of regular time Edin Dzeko headed again on the crossbar before substitute Zlatan Muslimovic hit a post from the rebound.
Portugal started the FIFA World Cup 2010 qualification as favourite of Group 1, but the team of coach Carlos Queiroz completed the group stage only as second behind Denmark. The Portuguese finish was strong and so they advanced to the play-offs. Portugal has won the last 4 qualifying games without receiving a goal. Queiroz´s side lost only 1 group game in the running World Cup qualification (5 wins, 4 draws, 1 defeat). Portugal won the first leg of the play-offs against Bosnia-Herzegovina through a goal from Bruno Alves. The FC Porto defender scored by header towards a cross ball from Nani. Coach Carlos Queiroz will have to pass as well as in the first leg on superstar Cristiano Ronaldo (ankle injury). His substitute Nani was in the first leg Portugal's most enterprising player.
