UEFA Europa League round of 16 brings on Thursday the fixture between Russian champions
Rubin Kazan and German champions
VfL Wolfsburg. Kazan have never previously played against German teams, Wolfsburg met this season in the UEFA Champions League group stage on CSKA Moskva and won 3:1 at home before losing 2:1 in Moscow.
Rubin Kazan qualified as third of UEFA Champions League Group F for the Europa League knock out stage. They finished their group behind FC Barcelona and Inter Mailand and advanced so to the Europa League round of 32. In the first knock out round they beat Hapoel Tel Aviv - 3:0 at home and 0:0 at Tel Aviv. The reigning Russian champions are unbeaten in six European home matches (two wins and four draws). The last defeat was in the first round of the 2006/07 UEFA Cup with 0:1 against Parma FC. The Russian championship starts on upcoming weekend, but the team is already in good form. Last Sunday Rubin Kazan warmed up for the duel with Wolfsburg by winning their first Russian Super Cup title with a 1:0 win against CSKA Moskva.
VfL Wolfsburg finished Group B of the UEFA Champions League behind Manchester United and CSKA Moskva and advanced as third to the UEFA Europa League Round of 32. In the first knock out round the Wolves beat Villarreal CF with a 2:2 draw in Spain and a 4:1 home win. VfL Wolfsburg´s away balance in the running European season: 1 win, 1 draw, 2 defeats. In the German Bundesliga VfL Wolfsburg have won the last three games and moved forward on table rank 10. Altogether they are since five regular games unbeaten (4 wins, 1 draw).
