VfL Wolfsburg hosts on Thursday
Rubin Kazan in the
second leg of the UEFA Europa League round of 16. The
first leg in Russia ended 1:1 drawn, so the German champions Wolfsburg are in the favourite role to advance to the next round.
VfL Wolfsburg finished Group B of the UEFA Champions League behind Manchester United and CSKA Moskva as third and advanced therewith to the UEFA Europa League Round of 32. In the first knock out round the Wolves beat Villarreal CF with a 2:2 draw in Spain and a 4:1 win at home. VfL Wolfsburg will be for the first time in the round of 16 of European competitions. Wolfsburg´s home balance in this European season: 2 wins, 1 draw, 1 defeat. In the German Bundesliga they have won the last four games and moved forward on table rank 8. Altogether the Köstner-men are since seven regular games unbeaten (5 wins, 2 draws).
Rubin Kazan qualified as third of UEFA Champions League Group F for the Europa League knock out stage. They finished their Champions League group behind FC Barcelona and Inter Mailand. In the Europa League round of 32 they beat Hapoel Tel Aviv - 3:0 at home and 0:0 at Tel Aviv. The reigning Russian champions have won just one of their four away games in this European season (1 win, 1 draw, 2 losses). The start in the Russian championship was perfect. Rubin Kazan celebrated last Sunday a 2:0 home win over Lok Moskva through two late goals from Andrey Gorbanets (87.) and Aleksandr Bukharov (90.).
