The
UEFA Champions League quarterfinal brings on Tuesday the first leg between
FC Bayern München and
Manchester United. The Munich will reach their first UEFA Champions League semi-final since winning the trophy in 2001, while ManU won the Champions League in 2008 and was runners-up last season.
FC Bayern München qualified as second of Group A for the UEFA Champions League knock-out stage. Bayern won the last group game at Juventus Turin with 4:1. Therewith they become second ahead Juventus and advanced to the round of last 16. In the first knock-out round they beat ACF Fiorentina on away goals. Manchester United advanced as winner of Group B to the UEFA Champions League round of 16. The Champions League winner of 2008 have won four of their six group games (4-1-1) and finished the group ahead CSKA Moskva, VfL Wolfsburg and Beşiktaş Istanbul. In the round of 16 they eliminated AC Mailand with a 3:2 away win in the first leg and a 4:0 triumph at Old Trafford. Wayne Rooney scored in both matches two goals. The last round of the Premier League brought a 4:0 away win at Bolton Wanderers, therewith Ferguson´s side defended the table leading ahead Chelsea and Arsenal.
The most memorable meeting between Bayern München and Manchester United was the UEFA Champions League final in 1999 when United won through two added-time goals from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjær with 2:1.
