The
UEFA Champions League semi-final brings on Wednesday the first leg between
FC Bayern München and
Olympique Lyonnais at the Munich Allianz Arena. Bayern hopes to qualify for their first final since they won the UEFA Champions League in 2001. For Olympique Lyonnais it´s the first UEFA Champions League semi-final in history.
Bayern München´s last hurdle on their way to the Champions League final is Olympique Lyonnais. The road to the semi-final was very difficult and hard. Bayern qualified as second of Group A for the UEFA Champions League knock-out stage through a 4:1 win in the last group game at direct rival Juventus Turin. In the first knock-out round Bayern München beat ACF Fiorentina on away goals. Bayern München have won the first leg with 2:1 followed by a 2:3 at Fiorentina. The quarter final against Manchester United brings the same results - Bayern München have won the first leg at home with 2:1 followed by a 2:3 at Manchester. In the German Bundesliga the Munich are on championship course. Last weekend they celebrated a 7:0 home win over Hannover 96 through goals from Arjen Robben (3), Ivica Olić (2) and Thomas Müller (2).
The UEFA Champions League semi-final against Bayern will be the first one for Olympique Lyonnais in history. Furthermore they have never played in the final of any major European competition. Their best result was in the 1963/64 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup when Olympique lost the semi-final against Sporting Lissabon. However, come back to the current competition. Olympique Lyonnais finished the group stage behind ACF Fiorentina on second place. In the first knock-out round they provided for a big surprise. Olympique beat Real Madrid and eliminated the star ensemble - 1:0 at home, 1:1 at Madrid. The quarterfinal brought a 3:2 aggregate win over French champions Girondins Bordeaux - 3:1 at home, 0:1 at Bordeaux. Lyon have won four of their last five away games against German clubs (4 wins, 1 draw). In the national championship, Ligue 1, Olympique Lyonnais faces rank 3 already 9 points behind league leader Olympique Marseille. The last round brought a 2:2 draw at Girondins Bordeaux.
