36th Round: Manchester United - Tottenham Hotspur

Football - England - Premier League - 2010-04-23
Sir Alex would hold the top spot in the table for at least 24 hours if his Red Devils can repel Redknapp's men. Last week's Manchester derby was a tight affair that saw Wayne Rooney virtually shut down and if it were not for a 93' goal from Paul Scholes, United would be two points the lesser. The derby victory could provide the Red Devils with the spark they need for a perfect finish. Chelsea still have a difficult match away at Anfield and then go to face Wigan, who have beaten Arsenal, Chelsea and Aston Villa this year.

The history between these two sides has been extremely one-sided as of late. Of the last 17 meetings, United have won 13 and not lost once. The Red Devils have never been beaten at home by Spurs in the Premier League. Surprisingly, Tottenham have been the ones to strike first in the past 4 matches, but United came from behind each time. Sir Alex will welcome the return of centreback Rio Ferdinand after the English international missed last week's derby with a groin injury.

Tottenham will provide a stiff competition for the home side. In the last 2 matches alone, Spurs have taken care of Arsenal and Chelsea, both with 2-1 scorelines. Harry Redknapp is pushing to secure a fourth placed spot and is in the driver's seat, 2 points ahead of Roberto Mancini and Man City.

Tottenham's away record has been somewhat inconsistent this season (6-5-5) and they lost 3-1 to Sunderland on their last outing. Aaron Lennon is also coming off a groin injury and will join the squad for the trip to Old Trafford. Talented Niko Kranjcar will be out for the rest of the season but Redknapp has enough talent at his disposal.

Tottenham have been very convincing especially in their last 2 home victories over Arsenal and Chelsea. However, Spurs have not defeated a big four team on the road in over 60 matches. The players will know that Manchester City have a tough match-up against Arsenal and could be resigned to defeat if Rooney manages to get one past them early on. Sir Alex knows has shown he can beat Redknapp and this Saturday should prove no exception.
