The
UEFA Champions League semi-final brings on Tuesday the second leg between
Olympique Lyonnais and
FC Bayern München at the Stade de Gerland. The first leg one week ago ended with a 1:0 win for Bayern München through a goal from
Arjen Robben (69.). So Bayern have a good chance to qualify for their first final since they won the UEFA Champions League in 2001.
The UEFA Champions League semi-final against Bayern München will be the first one for Olympique Lyonnais in history. Furthermore they have never played in the final of any major European competition. Olympique Lyonnais finished the group stage behind ACF Fiorentina on second place. In the first knock-out round they provided for a big surprise. Olympique beat Real Madrid - 1:0 at home, 1:1 at Madrid. The quarterfinal brought a 3:2 aggregate win over French champions Girondins Bordeaux - 3:1 at home, 0:1 at Bordeaux. The semi-final first leg in Munich ended with a 0:1 defeat, but Lyon have a formidable European home record this season (5 wins, 1 draw) and so the chance to overturn a 1:0 deficit. Lyon have won their last three UEFA Champions League home games. In the national championship, Ligue 1, Olympique Lyonnais faces rank 5 but they have one game in hand.
German record champions Bayern München are on the best way to their first final since they won the UEFA Champions League in 2001. The road to the semi-final was very difficult and hard. Bayern qualified as second of Group A for the UEFA Champions League knock-out stage through a 4:1 win in the last group game at direct rival Juventus Turin. In the first knock-out round Bayern München beat ACF Fiorentina on away goals. Bayern München have won the first leg with 2:1 followed by a 2:3 at Fiorentina. The quarter final against Manchester United brought the same results - Bayern München have won 2:1 at home followed by a 2:3 at Manchester. In the German Bundesliga the Munich are on championship course. Two rounds before season end they are league leaders. The last weekend brought a 1:1 draw at Borussia Mönchengladbach.
