On upcoming Wednesday
Austria welcomes Croatia in an
international friendly match at the Hypo Group Arena of Klagenfurt. Both teams are not qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2010 and so the fixture on Wednesday becomes to a first test match for the UEFA EURO 2012 qualification.
At the EURO 2008 Austria and Croatia played the opener of Group B. Croatia have won this game through a penalty from Luka Modrić with 1:0. Now the Austrian team have the chance to revenge. The fixture on Wednesday is at the same time Austrians second last test match before the start of the EURO 2012 qualification, when Austria hosts Kazakhstan on 7 September, 2009. The last qualification, for the FIFA World Cup, ended for the Austrian team with rank 3. Austria started with a 3:1 win over France but then they lost against Lithuania and Serbia and played 1:1 drawn at Faroe Islands. So their chance was after four matchdays just theoretical.
As well as Austria also Croatia are not qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa. The Croatian team finished Group 6 behind England and Ukraine on rank 3 and so they didn´t reach the play-offs. Croatia have won 6 of their 10 qualification games (6 wins, 2 draws, 2 losses), but at the end they were one point behind second placed team Ukraine. The friendly fixture against Austria is for the team of manager Slaven Bilić the first warm-up match for the EURO 2012 qualification, when Croatia faces in Group F on Greece, Israel, Latvia, Georgia and Malta.
