The
19th FIFA World Cup starts in just three weeks. So the 32 qualified teams are already in the preliminary phase. On upcoming Monday
England hosts
Mexico in an
international friendly match. Both teams are qualified for the tournament in South Africa and so the fixture becomes a good test match.
After their fantastic achievement in the UEFA qualification round England are one of the favourites at the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa. The team of manager Fabio Capello have won nine of their ten qualification games (9 wins, 1 loss) and so they finished their Group 6 as winner. England have also won their five home matches, amongst others a 5:1 against Croatia. Altogether the English team scored 34 goals and collected just six goals against. Best scorer in the qualification round was Wayne Rooney with 9 goals. England have played one match in the 2010 season which has ended with a 3:1 win over Egypt through goals from Peter Crouch (2) and Shaun Wright-Phillips.
Mexico has qualified as second of the CONCACAF zone for the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa. Their start in the final qualification round was anything but good. The Mexicans' have lost three of the first four games and so they were just on rank 5 after four matchdays. The results: 2:0 vs Costa Rica, 0:2 vs USA, 1:3 vs Honduras and 1:2 vs El Salvador. The 1:3 defeat against Honduras cost Sven-Göran Eriksson his job and his replacement by Javier Aguirre. Under Aguirre the Mexican team becomes stronger and stronger. Mexico celebrated five wins and a draw. The only defeat was in the first game under Aguirre against El Salvador. So the Mexicans' finished the qualification on rank 2 and advanced to the final tournament.
England faces at the WC 2010 in Group C on USA, Algeria and Slovenia. Mexico´s opponents in Group A are South Africa, Uruguay and France.
