For the first time since
1950 a competitive match between Union Berlin and Hertha Berlin will take place on Friday evening. This derby electrifies the capital, as Union against Hertha is also East against West Berlin, working class against establishment, fight against technique.
Hertha BSC Berlin just relegated from Bundesliga and tries to force the immediate promotion with a strong squad that has high technical abilities. So far it worked out well, as the West Berliners have won the first three matches.
Union Berlin has only one third of the budget that Hertha has, but convinced last season with good physical football and strength at home. The rejuvenated team made only one point this season and looked quite insecure when got beaten 0:2 at Paderborn last Saturday.

The supportes of Union Berlin rebuilt their stadium "Alte Försterei" mainly on their own in 2009 and saved their club almost 2.5 million euros. The stadium that has cult status will of course be sold out with 18.000 fans, 1400 of them from Hertha.
The last competitive match between Hertha and Union was played 1950 in the Berlin-League, Union was called Union Oberschönweide that days and won 5:1. Since then two friendlies were played that both Hertha won.
Hertha has the better players and the better form and is therefore favourite. But a special derby like this has it own rules. Union will put their physical strength and their home advantage in the balance. Share of the points not ruled out.
