As sovereign second in the group behind Australia Japan qualified for the World Cup 2010. Only against the group winner the Japanese national team suffered defeat, although in the last meaningless group game. In a friendly game against World Cup host South Africa in November 2009, they achieved a goalless draw.

Since World Cup 1998 in France Japan is a permanent guest at the world's largest sporting event. Admittedly Japan lost there every game, but at the home World Cup (in co-operation with South Korea) they put up a good show. In front of their home crowd Nippon even reached the last sixteen round, where they lost were against Turkey 0-1.
