New Zealand
As winner of the OFC Nations Cup 2008 New Zealand qualified for the decider against the fifth of the Asian group, Bahrain. A goalless draw abroad and a 1:0 home win meant the only second World Cup appearance for the island state. The decisive factor was probably also the change of the eternal rival Australia in the Asian federation.
The elation over the successful qualification of the All Whites, based on the famous national rugby team (All Blacks), reached unimaginable scale. Soccer displaced New Zealand's must popular sport from the front pages of newspapers. The team consists largely of unknown players with no experience in leagues with an international reputation. Only a few players managed to jump into the UK or the USA.
