Augsburg had been the first favourite to relegate at the beginning of the season and most of the time it looked like they would go back to 2. Bundesliga again. But the no-name side did not give up, displayed great discipline and fighting spirit and made it out of the dark. After an (lucky) victory last Saturday in Wolfsburg they are even four points ahead of the play-off position now. Particular on their own ground Augsburg are doing pretty well, were defeated only four times at home, but had no chance against an in-form VfB Stuttgart (1:3) last time.
The
FC Schalke still stand on the 3rd position, but after defeats in Nürnberg (0:4) and in the big derby against Dortmund (1:2) last week, their direct Champions League position is in danger, as Mönchengladbach lie just a point behind them. Now the team had been bothered by a gastropod-intestinal disease during the week. Also with Papadopoulos and Fuchs (suspended) half the defense will miss the Augsburg match. However, coach Huub Stevens has enough quality in his squad, will send a decent side on the field. Schalke could win just two away matches in 2012.
