Champions Bayern Munich will begin the defence of their Bundesliga crown on Friday evening with a clash against Schalke 04 at the Allianz Arena.
Bayern ended last season on a historic run, winning 25 of their last 26 games. That amazing run won them the coveted treble of the Bundesliga – their 8th successive title, the German Cup and the Champions League. Given how slow they started the season, few would have predicted this amazing ending.
The undeniable difference was, of course, the appointment of Coach Hans Flick to take over the reins. He completely changed the mood in the dressing room and gave room to players that previous coach Niko Kovac had sidelined and they grew from strength to strength and proved to be far too good not just domestically but in Europe as well.
Flick will be looking for a quick turnaround and a better start to the season. New signing Leroy Sane is set to fit in seamlessly into the offensive juggernaut that crushed everything in their wake last season.
After a relatively good first half of the season, Schalke had an atrocious end to the season, going on a horrendous winless streak, narrowly missing out on relegation, finishing in 12th place, just 8 points clear of the relegation zone.
They could not have asked for a more difficult start as Bayern Munich are a menacing threat against any team. Schalke, in particular, have had it rough against them, failing to win in any of their last nine visits to the capital.
Coach David Wagner will be hoping to get something out of this game following a relatively decent output in pre-season games. They’ve also added some depth to the squad with the addition of Ibisevic and Palencia to the squad who bring in some punch in their attack.
There is no denying that this Bayern Munich side is head and shoulders above everyone else in the league. They will certainly be looking to send a message to the rest of the Bundesliga right from the get-go and this, therefore, means they are likely to dominate and go for Schalke’s throat from start to finish. The gap in talent and quality between these two sides is so wide that it is difficult to see anything other than an easy win for the Bavarians. We are backing Bayern to win at Half time and fulltime @ 1.42 with Bwin as our initial betting tip for this game.
Bayern is a goal-scoring machine. They were ruthless against some of Europe’s top teams to end the season and Schalke isn’t anywhere as good as some of the teams Bayern was routinely whooping. They’ve had tremendous success against Schalke and we expect that to continue. They have goal-scoring threats from literally all over the pitch. Serge Gnabry featured prominently on their scoring charts particularly at the end of the season and we fancy he will carry the momentum into the new season. We are backing him to Score Anytime @ 1.83 with Bwin betting app as our final tip for this game.
