Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool have had a less-than-stellar season thus far. After a run-in with Manchester City literally to the last day of the last season, many pundits had expected them to mount another challenge for the title this season but they have fallen well short of these expectations thanks to inconsistent performances coupled with injuries to key players at different points in the season.

They have shown some signs of improvement in recent weeks as they moved to 6th place thanks to a 2-0 midweek win over Wolves. These improvements have however been mixed with woeful results like their FA Cup exit at Brighton, the tepid draw with Crystal Palace in the league, and an embarrassing home loss to Real Madrid in the first leg of their UCL round of 16 tie.  

That said, Liverpool have had a good run against their fierce rivals at Anfield. They are unbeaten here in the last 6 encounters against the Red Devils (3D, 3W) since losing 1-0 in Jan 2016. Klopp himself has also had an impressive record over United as Liverpool boss and he will be hoping to maintain that here.

MANCHESTER UNITED

Fresh off of winning the Carabao Cup over Newcastle in last Sunday’s final, Manchester United continued their quest for more silverware with a 3-1 win against West Ham to book a slot in the last 8 of the FA Cup. The scoreline might however be a bit flattering as they were made to work for it, coming from a goal down in the second half to pump in two goals in added time after equalizing in the 78^th minute.

United are experiencing a bit of a renaissance under Erik ten Hag with the manager seemingly installing a winning mentality that has not been seen at the club since the departure of Sir Alex Fergusson. Incidentally, the turnaround in their season began with a 2-1 win over the hosts at Old Trafford and they could yet complete a double over their rivals for just the ninth time in Premier League history.

The Red Devils are currently third on the log, 11 points adrift of Arsenal and 6 of 2^nd placed Man City, with a game in hand on both of them. They remain very much alive in four competitions with a last-16 Europa league tie against Real Betis and a last-8 meeting with Fulham in the horizon. Ten Hag managed to rest some of his key guns in midweek and they should be good to go here.

LIVERPOOL VS MAN UNITED PREDICTIONS

With both of these teams having played in midweek, there is really no competitive edge for either of them in terms of fitness levels. We nevertheless expect a close opening half to the game with neither side willing to cede a lot of ground in what will shape up to be like a close game of chess between two grandmasters. Despite their general struggles, Liverpool’s defence at Anfield has been quite good. They tend to show up against the big teams. The visitors are also quite solid at the back.
