German Supercup

Familiar foes Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund face off on Wednesday evening in the final of the 2020 DFL-Supercup at the Allianz Arena.

Dortmund kept pace with Bayern in the race for the Bundesliga title for the better part of last season but just couldn’t get over the edge. They have played second fiddle to Bayern in recent times but one of their rare triumphs over Bayern actually came in last year’s edition of this cup as goals from Paco Alcacer and Jadon Sancho saw them running out 2-0 winners.

They come into this match on the back of a disappointing 2-0 defeat at Augsburg at the weekend in a game they dominated for long stretches but the final product just wasn’t there. They had won the previous three games and that lack of consistency is proving to be a major issue for Lucien Favre’s charges.

Favre will be hoping for a strong showing from them but it is difficult to see how he will pull out a result with all the injuries he is dealing with on his team.

After a scintillating run of 23 straight winning games – a run that saw them netting four trophies, Bayern were brought down to earth by Hoffenheim at the weekend, as they slew the giants 4-1 in what was easily the shock of the weekend, or even more accurately the shock of the season so far.

There is no doubt fatigue played a major factor in the 4-1 loss at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena, as coach Hansi Flick opted to give some of his key starters a breather in that game by benching them. He tried to bring them on in the second half, but it was too little too late as Hoffenheim piled on their misery and ran them off the pitch.

Flick does not have a lot of injury issues to deal with and he will certainly field his strongest lineup this time hoping for a swift response to the embarrassing loss.

Despite losing to Hoffenheim on Saturday, it is not a stretch to say that Bayern are still the best team in world football at the moment. They’ve won four trophies this calendar year alone and all indications are they will make that five. They have dominated this fixture in recent years and they just have too many weapons at their disposal and with Dortmund missing key players, we are backing Bayern to get the win here @ 1.49 with Betway as our first betting prediction for this game.

With both teams coming off losses, we can expect a response in this game. Bayern, in particular, will come out with guns blazing. They have conceded the first goal in the first half of their last two games, which is quite odd considering that is precisely what they do to most teams. They had scored the first goal within 20 minutes of play in seven of the previous eight. We are backing them to get back to their winning ways by scoring the first goal of the first half @ 1.72 with Betway betting app as our final prediction for this game.
