Bayern Munich v Eintracht Frankfurt

As the season reaches a dramatic finale, Bayern Munich’s quest for a domestic double will be put to a test when they host Eintracht Frankfurt in the semi-finals of the DFB Pokal on Wednesday evening

Holders Bayern have dominated this competition just like they have the Bundesliga itself, reaching the final six times in the last eight seasons. Of their seven straight titles, four have been accompanied by this cup. With Bayer Leverkusen and fourth-tier Saarbrucken on the other side of the semifinal ties, it is easy to see why they are overwhelming favourites to win a second successive cup double.

Hans Flick’s side are a heartbeat away from winning the league title and they look unstoppable right now. They have won all five games they have played since the resumption to make it 19 wins from their last 20 competitive games. Last weekend’s 4-2 away win at fifth-placed Bayer Leverkusen means they only need two more wins from their remaining 4 game to clinch their eighth Bundesliga crown on the trot.

They have however struggled a bit to put away opponents in this cup, with one goal margin victories in the last three rounds. But with the finish line in sight, it would be foolhardy to expect that trend to persist. Hans has a virtually fully fit squad to choose from and we expect that he will field a very strong lineup for the game.

Adi Hutter’s side have had some relative success in this season’s cup competition with wins over Mannheim, St Pauli, RB Leipzig and Werder Bremen in previous rounds to bring them to this semifinal encounter against the holders, who they incidentally beat in the 2018 final.

With survival in the Bundesliga virtually guaranteed but with no hope of getting into the Europa slots in the league, this Cup remains their only hope to not only sneak into Europe but also bring some joy to their fans following a lacklustre season.

Frankfurt do have some injury concerns to contend with though. Gelson Fernandes and Goncalo Paciencia have both been ruled out. Filip Kostic meantime remains suspended for this match after getting his marching orders in the quarter-final win over Werder Bremen.

Bayern are on their own planet right now. They are simply head and shoulders above everyone else, particularly at home where they have won nine and drawn one of their last 10 games. They are so in tune both defensively and offensively. They put five past Frankfurt a couple of weeks or so ago and we are therefore backing them to pick up a comfortable win here.

Frankfurt, however, have had relative success against Bayern’s formidable defence. We have had both teams scoring in 5 of their last 7 encounters. Being a cup game, a semifinal at that, drama is always guaranteed and we expect goals to flow on both ends.
