After failing to qualify for Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup, Netherlands are back in the fold for Euro 2020 with an opening-round match against Ukraine on Sunday.

NETHERLANDS

Netherlands have traditionally been a football powerhouse having lifted this trophy in 1988, along with four other semifinals. They have also been to the World Cup finals three times. It, therefore, came as a massive shocker when they failed to even qualify for both events in 2016 and 2018.

Ronald Koeman was appointed to oversee the rebuilding process and he did a good job, leading them to second place behind Germany in the qualifiers before taking up the Barcelona job, giving way for Frank de Boer to pick up from where he had left.

UKRAINE

Ukraine had a disastrous campaign in the 2016 edition, losing all three group games and failing to score even a single goal. However, they have made significant strides under former star striker Andriy Shevchenko, finishing top in a qualifying pool that included Portugal, taking four points off the holders in an unbeaten campaign of six wins and two draws.

They blew hot and cold in the Nations League last year. Significantly, they claimed the scalps of Spain and Switzerland at home. March’s 1-1 draw with France in Paris in a WC qualifier also underlined this progress, although further draws with Finland and lowly Kazakhstan show there is still work to be done.

Shevchenko will use this tournament to gauge their progress and as they have already shown, they can and will go toe-to-toe against anyone in front of them.

NETHERLANDS VS UKRAINE BETTING TIPS

This is going to be a closer game than the bookmaker odds suggest. The Netherlands are favored to win but it won’t be a walk in the park as many might think. Ukraine are a solid opponent that will be hard to break down and can be lethal on the counter. Because of this threat of the counter, we expect De Boer who has switched begin a back four and a three-man defence interchangeably to stick with the former here. Ultimately, the Dutch should have enough to get the win here. We’ll play the safe card though and go for a combo bet of DC Netherlands/Draw and Under 3.5 goals @ 1.46 as our first betting prediction.
