Manchester City travel to high-flying Southampton on Saturday afternoon looking to revive their fast-fading title challenge.
Â
Southampton have no doubt been one of the surprise packages this season. Seated third on the table, the Saints have only lost three games in their 13 league assignments, winning 7 and drawing another three. Only Liverpool and Leicester have picked up more wins than them.
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s charges drew 1-1 away at Arsenal on Wednesday night, with Theo Walcott’s first-half opener cancelled out by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang second-half strike. Southampton were in the end left frustrated with the point as Arsenal played the majority of the second period with 10 men following the dismissal of Gabriel for a second bookable offence in the just after the hour mark.
They won this corresponding fixture 1-0 last season and are playing well enough to pose a serious threat yet again.
Manchester City who many thought would pose the biggest threat to Liverpool’s plans to defend the title have been underwhelming to start the season. City have won back-to-back games once this season and they are already playing catch-up to Liverpool as they find themselves in a rather unfamiliar 9th place on the log, 8 points off the top.
City seem to lack the flow and sharpness they have been known to play with over the last decade of their dominance in English football. They looked clueless upfront in the dour derby draw against neighbours and struggled to create meaningful chances in the following 1-1 midweek draw at home against lowly West Brom, despite enjoying 77% possession.
This is a tough away fixture and Pep Guardiola will need his squad to improve on their recent performances to get anything from St Mary’s.
Even though City have been disappointing this season, it has a lot to do with their lack of a scoring output rather than their style of play. They still dominant possession in most of their fixtures. With all the pressure on them coming into this fixture, we can expect to go on the overdrive from the get-go. They will be in attack mode throughout. They tend to get a lot of corners when they go gung-ho on the attacking averaging over 9 corners a game for the season. We feel they will get quite a few here and we are going for 7+ team corners for them @ 2.01 with Odibets as our first betting tip.
This game has goals written all over it. Ralph Hassenhuttl’s side have been scoring goals with ease, only finding to find the back of the net once in their last 20 EPL games going back to last season. City we all know on a good day can run up the score in a flash. 4 of their last 5 head to head encounters had both teams scoring and we feel confident in picking the same here @ 1.71 with Odibets Free Bet as our final call.
