Borussia Monchengladbach will host Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga this Friday with the visitors looking to stamp their authority at the top of the division with a victory.
Despite qualifying for the Champions League knockout stage for the first time in the club’s history, Gladbach have had a far less impressive domestic campaign. They currently sit on 7th place on the log, four points outside the Champions League qualification slots.
For a team that made the most of their home games for in previous seasons, they have been underwhelming at home this season. A return of two wins from their seven home games is their worst in 10 years and they will need to turn that around soon if they hope to get themselves in the thick of the top four battle.
Marco Rose’s side got back into the wins column with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Arminia Bielefeld on Saturday after a string of four games without a win. Their profligacy in front of goal has been one of their biggest issues and they will need to be more clinical against the Bavarians if they are to get anything from this game.
Even though they are not as dominant as they were last season, Bayern still lead the league after 14 games. They’ve looked vulnerable in recent weeks, conceding the first goal in a club-record eight consecutive games. However, testament to their fighting spirit and championship DNA, they have also set a record of not losing any of these eight games (5W, 3D).
This spirit was in display last weekend when they looked to be in serious at home against Mainz. They were down 0-2 at the break but they turned up the heat in the second half with goals from Joshua Kimmich, Leroy Sane, Niklas Süle and a brace from Robert Lewandowski ensuring an emphatic 5-2 drubbing and all three points claimed.
Hansi Flick will certainly be imploring on his charges to get their act together to start games, beginning with this one given the razor-thin margins at the top of the table.
It is clear that Bayern Munich are heads and shoulders above everyone else in the league. They have only lost one game all season. The fact that they have not lost any of their last eight games in which they conceded the first goal says a lot about their fighting spirit and hunger to retain their crown. They have the best attack in the league and when they seal some of the glaring loopholes at the back, there really isn’t any answer for them. Gladbach has held their own against the champions in recent seasons but without some of their leading strikers like Thuram for this tie, they appear to be shorthanded. We are therefore picking Bayern to Win @ 1.60 with Bwin as our first betting tip.
Defence will be a key emphasis for both teams here. Unlike previous years we are not anticipating a flurry of goals. Gladbach have struggled to find goals lately and Bayern will be looking to tighten up on defence. We fancy Under 3.5 goals @ 2.05 with Bwin betting app as our final call for this clash.
